Homedale
Village Jazz Festival Youth Band Contest |
Sunday
23rd. September
3.30pm
Wainuiomata RSA
Burden Ave, Homedale
Wainuiomata
On Sunday 23rd September at the Wainuiomata RSA there will be two concerts. The first (the Youth Band Contest, plus a few guests) will start at 3.30pm and finish around 5.30pm. The second will start at 7pm and will feature New Zealand School of Music pianist and singer Kirsten MacKenzie. There will also be other top class acts performing at this concert.
The philosophy behind this inaugural Youth Band Contest at the Homedale Village Jazz Festival is to give young musicians a chance to play together and inspire each other.
Contest Rules:
The competition is open to secondary school jazz bands.
Band members must be attending a secondary school for at least 10 hours per
week and must not be over 18 years of age.
A band can also contain 2 adult performers but there must be a ratio of at least
3 student performers to each adult performer. Adult performers cannot win individual
awards. The minimum size for a band is 3 performers. The maximum size for a
band is 23 performers (on stage at any one time).
Each band must perform 3
pieces. A band may choose to play less than 3 pieces if it desires ‘just
to have a play’, but such a band won’t be eligible to win awards.
These 3 pieces may be in any jazz style (eg. Swing, Latin, Ballad, Jazz Rock,
Fusion, New Orleans, Free Jazz). While the choice of pieces is left to each
individual band, bands are reminded that a balanced performance should be aimed
for and that the band’s performance should be in the ‘spirit of
jazz’.
The judges’ decision is final and no discussion or correspondence will be entered into.
Awards:
Any award (not including BEST BAND) may not be awarded at the
discretion of the judges.
